The Evolution of Hardwood Flooring in Calgary

The residential hardwood flooring market has changed over the years. There was a time in the not so distant past when almost all floors where sand on site (site finished) 1 1/2” Red Oak with a natural finish. That changed over the years as CMHC regulations were updated or deleted. Hardwood flooring in Calgary saw a large dip in sales during the 70s and 80s and many hardwood companies closed their doors. Smith Bros Floors Ltd were able to adjust to the changing market and managed to stay a float during these difficult economic times. The 1990s saw a resurgence in the hardwood flooring installing and finishing in Calgary as wood floors became fashionable again. New products and styles became available, the prefinished market started to take off, and new technology and products helped improve hardwood refinishing. The 21st century has seen changes in VOC laws and wood floor refinishing has leaned towards low VOC water based finishes. http://smithbrosfloors.com/site-finished-maple-stain-samples

Here in 2013 we see home owners and designers choosing a wide variety of species, colours, and widths. The preference now leans towards prefinished products as many mills now manufacture flooring that install, sand and finish on site products cannot compete with for durability or consistency. It is a trade off for sure, a beautiful hand crafted sand on site floor that has the charm and character of being completed by skilled trades people in a non sterile environment. Or a product that has been milled and finished in a factory where the environment is fully controlled. After it is installed the floor is complete and furniture can be moved in instantly. Both floor coverings are beautiful and have their pros and cons for certain applications, your best bet is to work with an experienced and knowledgeable sales professional.
