More Than Just Hardwood Vendors

While we certainly believe that our customers cannot be satisfied if they are unable to find a hardwood product that suits their needs, we also realize that the process does not end when we have successfully helped a client select the wood type, grade, and color that will be best for their home. We know that, as a loyal customer, you certainly have the option of installing your new hardwood product on your own, or employing an install company to handle that portion of your hardwood floor upgrade. However, at Smith Bros Floors, we are also highly trained and experienced when it comes to the installation process involved in your hardwood floor renovation.

If you do choose to install the hardwood flooring on your own, we have some helpful tips that can quicken the process for you. After choosing your boards, the next step is to measure the room they will be installed in. When ordering it is recommended to order 10-15% extra for any cutting mistakes or irregular boards. Minimum requirements for plywood subfloor is 3’4″, also look for any squeaks in the floor and repair with a long drywall screwed where the squeak occurs. Next, apply vapour barrier paper along the subfloor with a 4″ overlap secured. You can buy these rolls relatively cheap for around $12 at any home improvement store.

Begin installation on the longest, unobstructed wall in the room. Remember to remove shoe moulding and draw a chalk line 3/8″ from the baseboard – this will allow for the wood to expand during weather changes from hot and humid to cold and dry. Dependant on the type of hardwood purchased, you will either have to nail the boards into the subfloor or the boards will interlock with each other. Instructions for each specific type will be available when the boards are purchased.
